New York, New York
It all began with the idea to compose a fragrance inspired by the music of an artist whose work and way of presenting it to the world have long moved me.
In recent years, I’ve spent part of my time in New York, often traveling to hear his music live in different places there and in Europe. There was something deeply touching in those moments: the anticipation of the journey, the shared energy of a concert venue, the rush and joy of singing among strangers who felt like - and sometimes became - friends, and the connections made along the way. It felt like a song in itself, intimate, vulnerable, wild, unexplainable, but so very real. I began blending a scent in an effort to hold that feeling, to give shape to a kind of emotional melody: bright, tender, unseen, yet profoundly alive.
It was, in many ways, an attempt to translate one musician’s art into my own language: scent.
Later in the process, I added a personal touch: essences of some of materials he had mentioned loving. Woods used in guitar-making, rare in perfumery but rich in soul, became the heart of the composition. I visited small guitar shops in Manhattan, breathing in the scent of handcrafted instruments, some vintage, worn, and full of stories, others still holding the crispness of something yet to begin.
Mahogany, spruce, rosewood... blended with sandalwood, cedarwood, hinoki, and palo santo, form the body of the fragrance. Elemi adds an airy lift, while threaded between the layers are soft traces of spices and flowers, like the secret echoes you find when leaning into the heart of a beloved, vintage guitar.
This fragrance is unlike any I had created before. It carries within it a song, not only mine, but one inspired by the work, presence, and intense beauty of another person. It was my first scent influenced by music, and it opened a new path for me. It also captures the essence of my time in New York, connecting with artists and ideas, drawn together by rhythm, resonance, creativity and expression.
If you listen closely, perhaps it will sing to you, too.
